Guggal, also known as guggul and Indian bdellium, is an oleo-gum resin. It is obtained from the trunk and branches of the Commiphora wightii shrub. The plant belongs to the same genus as many of the trees that produce myrrh.

When burned over charcoal, guggal produces plenty of smoke. Its fragrance has warm, earthy and balsamic notes reminiscent of myrrh. Guggal resin has been used as incense in Indian homes, temples and religious ceremonies.

In Indian traditions, guggal smoke is associated with purification, protection and preparing a space for ritual. It has been used in connection with prayer, meditation and other spiritual practices.

How to burn incense resin

Fill a heat-resistant incense burner with sand. Place an incense charcoal disc on the sand and light it with a lighter or matches. Allow the charcoal to heat until its surface has turned partly grey.

Place a small amount of guggal resin on the charcoal. Begin with a few small pieces, as guggal produces plenty of smoke. Add more resin only after the previous amount has burned.

Ensure good ventilation during use. We recommend burning incense resins near an open window or balcony door, or outdoors.

Safety

For use as incense only. Avoid inhaling the smoke directly.

Use only in a well-ventilated area or outdoors. Do not use near children or pets. Keep the product out of the reach of children and pets.

Treat burning incense charcoal as an open flame. Never leave it unattended. The charcoal and incense burner become extremely hot. Keep the burner on a heat-resistant surface and well away from curtains, textiles and other flammable materials.

Allow the charcoal to extinguish completely and cool before disposal. Incense charcoal normally burns for approximately 45–60 minutes.

Store the resin in a cool, dry place away from light.
