Symbolism of the Crow and Bird Skull
In Finnish folklore, the crow is a bird of omens, signs and thresholds. Its call was listened to as a prophetic message, one that could foretell a turn in the cycle of the year, a change in the weather or the approach of difficult times. According to an old folk belief, spring was on its way when the crow cried for the first time after Candlemas: a month later, the calf would already be calling out in the pasture.
In folk poetry, the crow’s voice takes on a darker tone. In the poetry material of the SKVR — Ancient Poems of the Finnish People — the crow “sings of a year of sickness”, thus appearing as a bird that senses change before humans do. It is a bird associated with omens of death, as well as an attentive messenger standing on the boundary between the everyday world and the unseen.
The symbolism of the crow includes a stark kind of wisdom. It observes, waits and reads the signs of its surroundings. As an amulet, the crow is a reminder that not all knowledge arrives as a clear answer. Sometimes it comes as a sound, a restlessness, a change in the air, or a moment when something previously hidden becomes visible.
The bird skull is a powerful symbol of death and the transience of life. It reminds us of mortality and the cycle of nature, yet through its association with the bird, it may also symbolise freedom, the ascent of the soul and passage into the world beyond. The bird is often seen as a link between sky and earth, and the bird skull symbolises this threshold — the ending of physical life and the beginning of a spiritual journey.
