Ganesha’s birth myths often repeat the theme of a new beginning emerging through difficulty. According to the best-known story, the goddess Parvati created a boy to protect her. Shiva, not knowing who he was, cut off his head. The gift of an elephant’s head restored his life, but permanently changed his form. For this reason, Ganesha is often shown holding a broken tusk, symbolising sacrifice and the kind of loss that can lead to understanding.
