Fossil - Shark (Otodus obliquus) vertebrae, M size

These fascinating vertebral fossils and fragments belong to the extinct mackerel shark, Otodus (Otodus obliquus) which lived during the Paleocene and Eocene epochs (c. 60 - 45 million years ago). The skeleton of Otodus sharks was made of cartilage instead of bone, which is why very few complete skeletons have survived and many species of the genus have only been identified by teeth and vertebrae. In good condition. Age-related wear, fractures and chips. Origin Oulad Abdoun Basin, Morocco, North Africa. Size of the sandstone and limestone layer approx. 60mm x 60mm x 30mm. The fossils themselves approx. 25mm x 15mm.

Symbol meaning

The shark symbolizes masculine energy, strength, protection and potency. Sailors and modern surfers have worn shark teeth around their necks for the same reason; to give physical strength and to protect against attacks by sharks or other sea creatures. The teeth have also been considered to protect against getting lost at sea and even drowning, as sharks are the masters of the seas. In the Middle Ages and especially during the Renaissance

During the Middle Ages, killing with various poisons was a popular way to get rid of unwanted family members, business partners, or enemies. Fossilized shark teeth and pieces of cartilage were used to protect against poisoning and were carried around as amulets. Sometimes they were even ground up and mixed with wine to neutralize poisons. Fossilized shark teeth carried at dinner parties were believed to change color if the food or drink was poisoned.

Carrying a shark tooth is believed to protect the wearer from symbolic attacks, loss, and accidents. The tooth supports masculine energy, strength, and self-confidence. It is also considered to act as a guide and spiritual guide in difficult and challenging situations.

Note! Fossils are natural products that are millions of years old, so each one is unique. Therefore, colors, shapes and brightness may vary. The condition varies from fair to good and there are typical wear, fractures and small chips for fossils.
