Symbol meaning
Egyptian faience ( tjehenet ) is probably the first man-made, non-clay-based ceramic material. The history of simple, glazed faience beads goes back to pre-dynastic Egypt (Badar cultural circle approx. 4400 BCE-4000 BCE). The main raw materials of Egyptian faience were crushed quartz, shale, alkaline substances and silica lime glaze. Originally, the ash obtained from burned plant material was used as a base, but in the Ptolemaic era it was completely replaced by natron. The glazes of the Egyptian faience shimmer in different shades of green and blue. The colors were probably intended to imitate precious gemstones, such as turquoise and Afghan lapis lazuli. Copper (turquoise) and cobalt (dark blue) were used to color the glaze. The blue color was associated with the Nile, heaven and the abodes of the gods. Green and turquoise were again seen as magical, the color of growth and rebirth.
