The Clementine illustration is based on Henri Lehmann’s 1845 portrait of Clémentine Karr. In Voglio Bene’s version, the historical female figure has been given tattoos and is surrounded by flowers and butterflies. The thoughtful gaze and the hand resting against her cheek have been retained as central features of the image.
Symbolic meaning
Clementine’s direct gaze can be interpreted as a symbol of independence, self-knowledge and personal boundaries. Her calm posture and determined gaze give the image a character that is both contemplative and strong.
Butterflies are associated with change and renewal, while flowers are linked to beauty, vitality and transience. The tattoos added to the historical portrait emphasise individuality: the figure can be seen as an image of personal identity and self-expression.
Symbolism is always multilayered and open to a variety of interpretations, which everyone can approach from their own perspective, enriching their understanding of the symbol’s different dimensions.
