Cascarilla - Obatala Efun

Made from ground eggshells and white clay, cascarilla is used in traditional African-American religions, particularly Hoodoo, Santeria, and Voodoo.

Symbol meaning

Cascarilla is considered to drive away harmful energies and demarcate the spirit world from the world of the living. Cascarilla's roots go back to the Yoruba people of Nigeria, West Africa, where the powder is known as Efun. Traditional efun is made from ground conch shells and white clay. In the Yoruba religion, it is used in rituals to appease the spirits (orishas). Because of its white color, it is especially associated with Obatala. In addition, efun is used for painting symbols, as body paint and as medicine. Efun and cascarilla are considered to have a cooling and calming effect and are considered to protect against negative or "hot" energies. Efun, like cascari, symbolizes peace, holiness and quiet power. In Africa, the color white is commonly associated with the spirit world, gods and ancestors. Damballa (also Damballah wedo, Dambala, or Dambalah) is one of the most important spirits (Loi, Lwa, or Loa) in Haitian voodoo. Dambala is traditionally depicted as a large white or black snake. He is considered to be the Father of Heaven and the creator of all living things. Papa Dambala is honored with pure white animal and food offerings such as white chickens, eggs, rice, milk, cakes and meringues.

Ritual use

Cascarilla is used for protection and ritual purification like salt. The powder has been found to be sprinkled inside and outside the apartment, for example at windows and doorways, to prevent the entry of unwanted energies and forces. In the same way, it has been used to call spirits and gods. Sprinkle cascarilla directly on the altar or pour it into a ritual vessel or a white seashell or conch shell. The powder can also be used to symbolically clean the altar furniture. When mixed with water, cascarilla produces a white paint that can be used to paint magical symbols (vèvè) or delineate a protective circle on the floor. Add a touch of cascarilla to the washing water to clear the space of symbolic obstacles or to strengthen your aspirations during ritual work.
