The silver-coloured Ankh amulet has engraved details across its surface. The lower section of the stem features the Eye of Horus, also known as the Wedjat (Udjat). Its bail can be used with a range of jewellery chains and cords.

The ankh is known from ancient Egyptian imagery from the Early Dynastic Period, around 3000 BCE. The symbol formed part of Egyptian hieroglyphic writing, in which the word Ꜥnḫ meant “life”. The original source of the symbol’s form is not known with certainty.

In Egyptian art, gods were often depicted holding the ankh or presenting it to the pharaoh. In imagery from the New Kingdom, an ankh was sometimes shown close to the pharaoh’s nose, which has been interpreted as the transmission of the breath of life. The symbol was also used in funerary art and amulets, where it referred to the continuation of life after death.

Symbolic meaning

The ankh symbolises life, vitality and continuity. As an amulet, it has also been associated with protection and the sustaining force of life. In modern use, the ankh can serve as a reminder of the value of life, inner strength and the continuity of life through periods of change.

Care instructions

Stainless steel tolerates occasional contact with water. Dry the amulet after it becomes wet and avoid strong cleaning agents and prolonged exposure to moisture to preserve its shine and blackened details.
