Bastet (also known as Bast) is one of the most beloved deities of ancient Egypt. Her story stretches back more than 4,000 years, and she represents feminine power, protection, and the pleasures of life.
Originally, Bastet was known as a fierce lioness goddess who protected the pharaoh in battle. Over time, as domestic cats became more common in Egypt, her image evolved into the gentler cat-headed figure that is widely recognised today. In Egyptian mythology she retained a dual nature: a nurturing protector, yet a relentless defender against the forces of darkness when needed.
Symbolic Meaning
This necklace carries rich ancient symbolism:
- Protection of home and family: Bastet was believed to ward off evil spirits and protect the household and children.
- Fertility and joy: She was associated with music, dance and celebration, bringing vitality and delight to life.
- Connection to the Ankh: Bastet was often depicted holding the Ankh, the key of life, emphasising her role as a giver and sustainer of life.
- The Eye of Ra: As the daughter of the sun god Ra, she protected the solar barque during its dangerous journey through the night, symbolising the victory of light over darkness.
Did you know? In ancient Egypt, cats were considered sacred to Bastet. They were treated almost like members of the family, and harming a cat was regarded as a serious crime.
Water Resistance
Although the jewellery is water-resistant, we recommend drying it after exposure to water and avoiding contact with cleaning agents to help ensure the longest possible lifespan.
