This metal incense burner from India is beautiful, with a lid adorned with traditional Himalayan symbols such as the flaming jewel and the lotus. The burner provides a safe base for burning charcoal and incense resin.

Symbolism

The flaming jewel at the top of the incense burner’s lid is part of the traditional Himalayan symbolic language, representing spiritual value and the development of consciousness. The lid’s decoration includes motifs typical of Tibetan ritual objects: the endless knot symbolizes the interconnectedness and continuity of all phenomena, the victory banner represents mental balance and inner strength, and the fish symbolizes free movement and unobstructed progress.

The lotus serves as a central symbol throughout the piece. It appears as a decorative motif on the lid, while its petal base forms the foundation of the burner. The lotus signifies purity and clarity of consciousness, depicting a space from which insight and focus can arise.

On the right side of the lid, the yin-yang symbol represents the principle of balance. The cloud patterns in the background, typical of Himalayan metalwork, are used to create space around the symbols and add visual rhythm.

Instructions for burning incense resin

Supplies

Step 1: Preparation

  1. Place the incense burner on a flat, heat-resistant surface, such as a metal tray or ceramic plate. Make sure the area is well ventilated.
  2. (optional) you can add sand or salt to the bottom of the incense burner. This will help disperse the heat and collect the ash.

Step 2: Lighting the incense charcoal

  1. Place the charcoal tablet on top of the v-shaped 'grid', in the middle of the incense burner
  2. Light the edge of the charcoal tablet with a match or lighter. When lit, the charcoal will start to spark and glow, but there will be no flame. When the surface of the charcoal turns grayish, it is ready to use. This may take a few minutes.

Step 3: Placing the incense resin

  1. Once the charcoal tablet is evenly lit and settled, you can add a small amount of incense resin to the tablet. You can use tongs or a spoon to do this.

Step 4: Enjoy the scent

  1. The resin will begin to melt and release fragrant smoke, filling the space with a pleasant aroma.
  2. Make sure the incense burner is always supervised while burning. Never leave burning incense unattended.

Step 5: End of use

  1. Once the resin has burned out, allow the charcoal tablet to burn out and cool completely before discarding it.
  2. Once the charcoal tablet and ash have cooled, you can remove them from the incense burner and dispose of them safely.

Safety tips

  • Always place the incense burner on a heat-resistant surface. Charcoal burns at very high heat.
  • Make sure the incense burner is away from flammable materials.
  • Make sure the incense burner is in a place that children and pets cannot reach.
  • Make sure the room is well ventilated to allow the smoke to evaporate and keep the air fresh.

With these instructions, you can enjoy the calming and purifying effects of incense resins safely and effectively.
