Patchouli oil is extracted from the Pogostemon cablin plant, a member of the mint family, and has a rich, musky, sweet and spicy scent. Patchouli oil is extracted from young leaves, which are dried and fermented before steam distillation. This oil improves in fragrance and strength over time.

The oil is said to balance emotions and create a romantic atmosphere. When used in an oil burner, it relieves anxiety and depression. In Europe and America, patchouli oil and incense were extremely popular in the 1960s and 70s among hippies, as the scent of patchouli masked the body odour and the smell of burnt cannabis.
