This beautiful pendant is inspired by the ancient Egyptian papyrus amulet (wadj). It is one of the most elegant symbols of vitality in history, evoking the lush greenery of the Nile Delta and the power of continuous growth.
Wadj: A Hieroglyph of Fortune and “Green” Vitality
The form of the pendant directly reflects the ancient Egyptian wadj hieroglyph, which depicts a flourishing papyrus stem. In the Egyptian language, wadj literally means “green”, “fresh” and “alive”.
When an ancient Egyptian wished to express good fortune or success, this same papyrus symbol was used. It does not refer merely to writing material, but represents a direct linguistic and symbolic connection to life force that is growing, renewing and enduring.
Symbolic Meaning: A Symbol of Eternal Youth and Flourishing
Vitality, youth and renewal: The papyrus amulet was believed to convey “fresh” energy to its wearer. It symbolised the ability to renew and grow, even as circumstances change — a reminder that life is in a constant state of flourishing.
Continuity and remaining “ever fresh”: Historically, these amulets were placed around the neck of the deceased in accordance with the rituals of the Book of the Dead. Their purpose was to ensure that life continued beyond death in a “fresh” state, preserving the soul’s vitality and eternal youth in the afterlife.
Health, voice and flourishing: The amulet held a central and important role, believed to preserve both health and, above all, the voice of the wearer. In Egyptian thought, the ability to speak and be heard was essential for continued existence. The amulet ensured that the individual could thrive and retain the power of expression.
An object of protection and magic: The papyrus amulet functioned as an active protector. It was worn during life as a bringer of good fortune and placed within the wrappings of the mummy to offer protection on the journey to eternity. It served as a symbolic anchor to the life-giving power of the Nile.
