Symbolic Meaning
The raven is one of the oldest known symbols of wisdom and transformation. It appears in myths as a threshold-crosser: a being that moves between the worlds of light and shadow, life and death, knowledge and mystery.
In Norse mythology, the ravens Huginn and Muninn flew out from Odin’s shoulders into the world each day and returned carrying knowledge and memory. They represent the two sides of the mind — thought and memory — as well as the ability to perceive the deeper layers of reality. In Celtic tradition, the raven is associated with the Morrígan, the goddess of war and fate, who could transform into a raven or send ravens as her messengers while presiding over moments of change and rebirth. In alchemy, the raven is linked to nigredo, the black stage, in which the soul passes through purifying darkness before the birth of new light.
Vegvísir and runes on the reverse: The Vegvísir, or Viking compass, on the back of the amulet is a symbol of protection and guidance. According to ancient tradition, its bearer will not lose their way on their journey, even when travelling into the unknown or through the eye of the storm.
In Semiphoras’ interpretation, the raven represents the guardian of knowledge and the bearer of hidden truth. It reminds us that true understanding is born only when one dares to look into the shadows and listen to what lies beyond silence.
