Brick-red jasper is a microcrystalline variety of quartz, with its red colour caused by iron oxides within the mineral structure. It is a hard and durable stone, which is why it has been used throughout history in jewellery, carvings, and decorative objects. Jasper forms slowly from silica-rich sediments or volcanic material. Its even, earthy colouring makes it easily recognisable and a highly valued ornamental stone.
Symbol meaning
Raw crystals are unpolished, and are therefore thought to retain the crystal’s original energy. They are ideal for those who appreciate the natural beauty of crystals and wish to maintain a connection with the stone’s innate power. Unlike tumbled stones, raw crystals can provide a stronger, more primal sense of energy, making them perfect for meditation and spiritual growth.
Jasper in history
In Ancient Egypt, red jasper was associated with life-protecting and renewing forces. The colour red was linked to blood as a symbol of vitality and continuity. This meaning is especially reflected in amulets connected to the Knot of Isis (tyet), which were made from red stone or red-coloured materials and referred to Isis’s protective, life-preserving power. Blood was not a symbol of death, but of renewal and the continuation of life. In ritual use, red jasper served as a tangible carrier of this symbolism.
Jasper as a Source of Support and Wholeness – Chakras and Energy
Jasper is considered one of the most nurturing stones. It is believed to support and sustain during times of stress, bringing a sense of calm and inner cohesion. It is thought to help bring the different aspects of life into a harmonious whole and to remind us of the importance of mutual support.
Jasper is said to align the chakras and is often used in chakra practices. It is associated with the root chakra, supports shamanic journeying, and is believed to enhance dream recall. The stone is thought to ground the body and energies, protect against and absorb negative influences, and cleanse and balance both the chakras and the aura. It is also said to harmonise yin and yang and to bring the physical, emotional, and mental bodies into alignment with the etheric level.
The Symbolic Influence of Jasper on Mind and Body
Jasper is believed to strengthen determination and encourage facing challenges directly. It is associated with honesty towards oneself and with finding strength in situations of conflict. On a mental level, it is thought to promote quick thinking, improve organisational skills, and help bring projects to completion. It is also believed to stimulate imagination and support turning ideas into reality.
On a physical level, jasper has traditionally been associated with prolonging sensual pleasure. It is also said to support recovery during long-term illness or hospitalisation and to help restore physical energy.
The stone can be used in skin contact as needed. Jasper is considered to work slowly and gradually, which is why long-term use is often recommended.
