Australian Lightning Ridge Opal

This opal comes from Lightning Ridge in Australia, known as one of the world’s most significant opal-producing regions. Lightning Ridge is especially famous for its dark and black opals, although lighter crystal and semi-crystal opals are also found in the area, with play of colour visible within a translucent body.

The stone shows the typical opal play of colour in shifting blue and green tones, changing with the light and viewing angle. Part of the surface has been left natural, allowing the stone’s original structure and host rock to remain visible.

Symbolic Meaning

Opal is described as a finely vibrating and sensitive stone, associated with the expansion of consciousness and the possibility of psychic and mystical experiences. Its meaning is often interpreted as being connected to strengthening originality and creative expression, as well as deepening the connection with one’s inner self and the expression of it.

Opal is regarded as a receptive and reflective stone. It is said to pick up thoughts and emotions, amplify them, and reflect them back to their source. It is also described as a karmic stone, reminding us that what we send out returns to us. Opal is also considered a protective stone. It has traditionally been used in situations where caution or discretion is needed, including in shamanic work.

Opal is said to enhance personal qualities and bring traits to the surface so that they can be transformed. It supports the strengthening of self-confidence and helps one understand their own potential.

On an emotional level, opal is traditionally associated with love, passion, desire and sensuality. It is described as a seductive stone, with its meaning often linked to the intensification of emotions and the release of inhibitions. Opal is said to reflect previous emotional states, including those connected with past lives, and to guide one towards taking responsibility for their feelings while encouraging positive emotional expression. Wearing opal is associated with strengthening loyalty, reliability and spontaneity, although it is also said to emphasise moodiness if one is already prone to it.

Opals are also described as being used in meanings connected with the Earth’s energy field, where they are believed to support the energetic structure, repair weaknesses, and promote the restoration of balance and stability.

Formation of Opal

Precious opal forms when silica-rich water gradually seeps into cracks, cavities and porous layers of rock. As the water evaporates, opal is left behind. Its internal structure consists of extremely tiny silica spheres, or a corresponding regular microstructure. This structure is what distinguishes precious opal from common opal: in precious opal, the structure is ordered enough to disperse light into different colours.

The famous play of colour in precious opal is not caused by pigments, but by the diffraction of light. When light enters the opal’s internal microstructure, different wavelengths are emphasised in different ways, which is why green, blue, yellow, orange or red may appear within the stone. There are also differences in the rarity of these colours. Blue and green are fairly common in precious opals, while bright orange and especially strong red are often more highly valued and rarer. For this reason, an opal that clearly shows red flashes is often considered especially desirable and of higher quality.

Every precious opal is a one-of-a-kind creation of nature. Its colours, patterning and glow change depending on the light, viewing angle and direction of the surface, making each stone unique. For this reason, no two precious opals are ever truly identical.

Please note: Opal is a natural material, and its surface may show natural irregularities, matrix and structural variations. The play of colour appears differently depending on the lighting and viewing angle. Meanings associated with stones can be personal and may depend on how the individual experiences the stone’s effect in their own life. The interpretation of symbols is also highly subjective, and each person’s experience of a stone may be unique.
