Coral - Acropora gemmifera, XL size, single piece

A particularly impressive and large stony coral species (Acropora gemmifera) belonging to the Acroporidae family. Species of the family are found, among other things, in the Indo-Pacific region. The old coral specimen comes from a Finnish private collection. The coral has been cleaned and bleached. The coral is about 270mm x 190mm x 80mm. Weight approx. 1880g.

Symbol meaning

Coral has been used throughout history as a protective symbol. It has been considered to have mystical and even sacred properties in many different cultures. It has been said to be a symbol of modesty, wisdom, happiness and immortality. It has been seen to cure physical illnesses and ailments such as intestinal cramps, stomach pain and urinary stones. Coral has also been used to treat fears, panic, stress, nervousness, depression and nightmares. Coral has been seen to attract success, balance and prosperity. White coral is believed to bring inner peace, harmony and happiness to its owner. The color white also represents purity and innocence in many cultures, making it an ideal symbol for those seeking spiritual guidance.

Ritual use

The ancient Egyptians used pieces of coral as protection against evil spirits of the underworld, as red coral in particular was believed to contain a drop of divine blood. There was a significant coral trade between the Mediterranean and India at the beginning of the first millennium. The Gauls used pieces of coral as decoration on their helmets and weapons, believing that it protected the wearer in battle. The Romans, on the other hand, hung pieces of coral around the necks of their children to protect them from the dangers of life and bad luck. As late as the early 20th century, coral was still used in jewelry in Italy to protect against the "evil eye" and infertility. In addition, local sailors have carried pieces of coral with them to protect their ships from storms and the dangers of rough seas.

Note! This coral is from a Finnish private collection from the early 20th century. It is a unique specimen. Age-related wear, cracks and minor surface defects.
