Symbolism
The image is inspired by Petrus Christus’s Portrait of a Young Girl (c. 1470), one of the earliest portraits of the Northern Renaissance. The original painting, housed in Berlin’s Gemäldegalerie, is renowned for its subtle lighting, restrained palette, and the masterful fusion of precise realism with a sense of inner presence.
Here, the image unfolds as a portrait of the inner being. Consciousness is only beginning to awaken: the gaze is distant and observant, as if belonging to a being just becoming aware of its own existence.
