Stone Information

Covellite is a copper sulfide mineral with the chemical formula CuS. It commonly forms as a secondary mineral in copper ore deposits when primary copper minerals undergo alteration processes near the Earth's surface.

The mineral is known for its distinctive dark color. Its surface often displays metallic reflections, sometimes showing bronze or golden flashes. These optical effects arise from the mineral’s structure and the way light interacts with fine copper compounds on the surface.

Covellite was first described as a mineral species in 1832. It was named after the Italian mineralogist Niccolò Covelli, who studied minerals associated with the volcanic region around Mount Vesuvius.

In nature covellite usually occurs in massive or platy aggregates. Because the mineral is relatively soft, polished pieces can develop scratches or wear over time.
