Moldavite – heavenly glass

  • Classification: tektite (natural glass)
  • Composition: silica-rich glass, formed by a meteorite impact
  • Chemical composition: SiO₂ approx. 75–80%, Al₂O₃ approx. 10–12%, FeO (II) approx. 1–2% and other compounds
  • Hardness (Mohs): 5.5–6

Moldavite was formed around 15 million years ago as a result of a meteorite impact, when molten terrestrial material was ejected into the atmosphere and later descended onto what is now the territory of the Czech Republic, solidifying into glass-like fragments. All known moldavites originate from this single meteorite event, which occurred approximately 14.7–15 million years ago in the Ries area of southern Germany, near the present-day town of Nördlingen.

The force of the impact propelled molten rock—mainly sandstone and sedimentary material—hundreds of kilometres into the air. Part of this material was thrown northeastward and settled over a vast region covering southern and central Bohemia and parts of Austria. This deposition zone, known as the Moldavite strewn field, is the only known source of moldavite in the world.

The distinctive olive-green translucence of moldavite is primarily caused by iron compounds, with manganese and the oxidation conditions within the molten glass during impact contributing to its unique hue.

Symbol meaning

Moldavite is associated with transformation and the expansion of consciousness. Its origin — a collision between Earth and sky — symbolically makes it a bridge between the material and spiritual realms. Moldavite represents the soul’s accelerated growth, sudden insights, and inner shifts in direction. It is often regarded as a gateway to a deeper understanding of one’s life purpose, its energy described as high-frequency or awakening.

In psychological symbolism, moldavite acts as a catalyst for transformation: it brings unconscious impulses to the surface and initiates the process of change. Its green hue is linked to the energy of the heart centre, signifying a connection to love, compassion, and emotional healing.
