Symbol meaning

Broken Angel belongs to the visual archetypes whose roots run deep in Western spiritual and artistic heritage. It is based on the myth of the fallen angel, known from the Book of Enoch and passages in Isaiah and Revelation. The core of the story is not so much about judgment, but about the expansion of consciousness: a being of light descends into matter and begins to understand through experience what could not be known in pure form.

In later art, such as Alexandre Cabanel’s L’Ange Déchu (1847), this myth transforms into a metaphor for humanity. The angel’s breaking no longer signifies shame, but depth of compassion and inner experience. The image becomes a narrative of the soul that has traversed both light and shadow, finding wholeness within them.

From an analytical psychology perspective — particularly in the thought of Carl Jung and James Hillman — the fallen angel symbolizes confronting the shadow and the incarnation of spirit. The angel’s descent to the earthly plane is a process where the spiritual ideal merges with human reality. True wholeness arises, where light is no longer separate from experience.

For Semiphoraks, Broken Angel is primarily interpreted as a symbol of transformation. The wings, glowing against a dark background, represent consciousness that has endured suffering while preserving its inner fire. The bent figure evokes the moment when one seeks a new connection with oneself and the world.

This image embodies the alchemy of the soul: spirit descending into matter, experience transforming into wisdom, and shadow merging with light. Broken Angel represents, for Semiphoras, the moment when a person becomes whole — not perfect, but true.
