Fossil - European bison (Bison bonasus) hoof bone
This magnificent prehistoric fossil is a distal phalanx of a young European bison (Bison bonasus) or Pleistocene wood bison (Bison schoetensacki). Pleistocene , ca. 120,000-11,650 years ago, North Sea. In fair condition. Age-appropriate wear, fractures and chips. Gorgeous light brown patina. Dirt and dust. Fossil treated with protective shellac and beeswax. Approx. 89mm x 57mm x 32mm.
The European bison ( Bison bonasus ) is a large bovine species and the European equivalent of the American bison. It was nearly extinct in the early 20th century, but was saved by zoos. The remains of bison suddenly appear in the fossil record about 11,000 years ago, at a time when the last ice age was just ending.
Symbol meaning
In early European cultures, bison were particularly valued for their large size, speed, and strength. These giants of the forest were a popular subject in ancient cave paintings and their images were scratched into rock. Bison symbolized balance, patience, endurance, and dedication. The bison's cousin, the bison ( Bison bison ), was an animal of immense significance to the Native Americans of North America. To them, bison symbolized wealth, freedom, abundance, and protection, among other things. Bison bone fragments have been considered to contain ancient wisdom and deep knowledge. They also serve as a reminder of the fragility and uncertainty of life.
Note! Fossils and ancient bones are natural products that are tens or hundreds of thousands, even millions of years old, so each one is unique. Therefore, colors, shapes and brightness may vary. The condition varies from fair to good and they have wear, fractures and small chips typical of fossils.
