Fossil - Horsetail plant (Asterophyllites)

Carboniferous period ca. 359 - 299 million years ago, Piesberg, Osnabrück, Germany, from a private collection in the Netherlands.

Asterophyllites was a species of the woody horsetail family (Calamitaceae). The leaves of the Asterophyllites species were long, narrow and grew radially in a cluster. The fossil is in excellent condition. There is age-related wear, fractures and small chips. The sediment is approx. 70mm x 62mm x 18mm. Weight approx. 140g.

The Carboniferous period was a geological period between the Devonian and Permian periods, approximately 359-299 million years ago. The Carboniferous period was characterized by species-rich and large horsetail forests, sedge forests, large frogs, as well as large dragonflies and millipedes over two meters long.
