Ghau amulet
Ghau (also called Gau, Gao) is a Tibetan Buddhist miniature altar, carrying a protective amulet or talisman and a sacred box, inside which other magical ingredients are kept. Most Ghaut are made of copper and bronze. The amulet's often silver-plated lid is decorated with elaborate inlays and sometimes with gemstones (turquoise & coral). The decorative inlays often feature important mantras and sacred symbols. The Ghau contains printed or handwritten messages blessed by a Lama. Behind a "window" separated by a piece of glass, there is also a votive (tsa tsa) made of clay or stone, a small image of Buddha or other deity, colorful prayer flags made of cloth, healing herbs, etc.
Symbol meaning
Ghau is believed to ward off evil spirits, negative energies, and protect its wearer in many ways. It is also believed to attract good luck, money, and love.
Ritual use
The Ghau amulet is often worn around the neck so that the box is close to the heart.
