Trilobites ( Trilobita ) are extinct arthropods that somewhat resemble the Moluccan crab or the sea urchin. They lived in the seas and were among the most successful animals of their time. Trilobites flourished during the Cambrian period, which began about 542 million years ago. Since trilobites were fully developed at that time, their ancestors must have lived as early as the Ediacaran period, 630–542 million years ago. Trilobites are the earliest known class of arthropods, with over 25,000 known species. The possible ancestor of trilobites was Spriggina , which lived in shallow marine waters during the Precambrian period. After the Cambrian period, trilobites became rare, but some species survived until the Permian period, which ended about 251 million years ago.
