Fossil - Trilobite ( Ogyginus corndensis) , M size

A stunningly beautiful fossil. The fascinating Ogyginus is a genus of aspidotrilobites that lived during the Ordovician period, about 450 million years ago. Fossils of the species have been found especially in Wales. The species was discovered in 1839 and was initially known as Asaphus corndensis. The species was later renamed. A small Ogyginus corndensis and its fragments in a fossil block. In good condition. The fossil is protected by a thin layer of shellac. Age-related wear, small fractures and cracks. The sediment block is approximately 115mm x 110mm x 25mm in size. The trilobite itself is approx. 44mm x 25mm. Weight approx. 486g.

Trilobites ( Trilobita ) are extinct arthropods that somewhat resemble the Moluccan crab or the sea urchin. They lived in the seas and were among the most successful animals of their time. Trilobites flourished during the Cambrian period, which began about 542 million years ago. Since trilobites were fully developed at that time, their ancestors must have lived as early as the Ediacaran period, 630–542 million years ago. Trilobites are the earliest known class of arthropods, with over 25,000 known species. The possible ancestor of trilobites was Spriggina , which lived in shallow marine waters during the Precambrian period. After the Cambrian period, trilobites became rare, but some species survived until the Permian period, which ended about 251 million years ago.
