Obsidian is a naturally occurring lava glass that forms when molten lava solidifies so quickly that the resulting rock does not have time to crystallize properly, but remains amorphous, or uncrystallized. Obsidian is typically black or dark gray in color, but other colors also occur. Obsidian has been used for centuries to make tools, decorative objects, and even surgical instruments because of its sharp and durable properties.
